August 2026 Update: Student Action Log Reports, Ostomies, and Enteral Tubes
Student action log reports show faculty what each student actually did in a scenario, plus full support for ostomies and enteral tubes in the chart.
I’ve been building toward this release all summer! Student action log reports are here, along with ostomies and enteral tubes in the chart and a more realistic way to document intake and output.
Student Action Log Reports
As students work through a scenario, HealthCareSim now tracks what they do and when: whether they scanned the MRN before opening a chart, what they documented, and every step of medication administration from the Med Cart through the cosignature. Students don’t turn anything on. It happens while they work.
Before the session ends, a student enters their name and downloads the report as a PDF, carrying your school’s logo and colors.
This is the piece I’m most excited about. Scanning an MRN before opening a chart, working a dose correctly before pulling a medication, logging out of a shared workstation: those are patient safety behaviors that are hard to observe in a busy lab and easy to document once the software is keeping track. The report shows you what a student did, in their own sequence, and leaves the judgment to you. You know your program’s expectations better than the software does.
Ostomies
You can now add ostomies to your patients, including colostomies, ileostomies, and urostomies. They’re built the same way you build wounds, lines, and drains, so there’s nothing new to learn. Students chart stoma condition, protrusion, size, peristomal skin, and the pouch or appliance, plus stool consistency and color where those apply.
Enteral Tubes
Enteral tubes have their own spot in the chart now instead of sitting with drains, so a feeding tube and a chest tube are no longer documented against the same list of options. With ostomies added as well, the flowsheet section that used to be Lines/Drains/Airways is now Lines/Tubes/Drains. Students verify placement, record external length, and chart site condition, which puts a real safety habit into the workflow early.
Wound Dressings
Wounds now include dressing status, so a dressing is charted as part of the assessment, not just as an intervention.
Measured and Unmeasured Output
Urine and stool output are split into measured and unmeasured. Measured takes a volume, same as before. Unmeasured gives you small, moderate, or large, which is how it usually gets charted when nobody measured it. Ostomy output was added too, so it can be documented in intake and output instead of a note.
Accessibility
I’m continuing to work toward WCAG 2.1 AA across HealthCareSim, including navigation improvements in this release. If your institution’s accessibility committee is reviewing HCS, I’m glad to talk with them directly.
