May 2026 Update: Note Templates and Flowsheet-to-Note Integration
Customizable note templates and the ability to pull flowsheet data directly into notes give students a more realistic and efficient charting experience.
This release focuses on the documentation side of nursing practice, with two features that work together to make note-writing faster, more structured, and more realistic.
Customizable Note Templates
HealthCareSim now includes a full set of note templates covering every note type in the system. Templates come pre-loaded with content out of the box, so programs have a working starting point from day one. Instructors can customize each template to match their program’s documentation standards, or remove template content entirely for note types where they prefer a blank slate.
When students create a new note, the appropriate template is automatically applied based on the note type they select. This gives students a structured framework that reinforces good charting habits while still leaving room for individualized documentation. It is the same kind of guided workflow students will encounter with templated notes in production EHR systems.
Inserting Flowsheet Data into Notes
Students can now pull recently documented flowsheet data directly into a note without retyping it. A picker in the note editor displays the patient’s most recent documentation organized by category, and students select the items they want to include. The selected data is inserted at the cursor position, making it easy to build a note that references current assessment findings.
This mirrors a common real-world workflow: nurses regularly pull vitals and assessment data into narrative notes, and having that capability in simulation means students practice the habit before they hit the floor.
Med Cart Polish
A small but appreciated improvement: after a waste cosign is completed, students now see a confirmation message so there is no ambiguity about whether the action succeeded. It is a minor detail, but clear feedback during medication workflows matters.
